Education for Sustainable Development

Environmental education in our school is implemented in the following ways:

1.   Formal curricula of school subjects

2.   School-based educational activities

(a)  Thematic talks given by the speakers from different environmental organizations are organized to help students recognize the importance of environmental conservation.

(b)  Visits and eco-tours, such as a visit to the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Sustainability Gallery at the Hong Kong Baptist University, are organized to broaden, extend and promote the environmental knowledge of our students beyond the classrooms, and to heighten their environmental awareness.

(c)  Field trips are held to provide students with the opportunity to explore environmental issues, engage in problem-solving, and make informed and responsible decisions.

(d)  Environmental workshops, e.g. a workshop on upcycling is sometimes held to improve students’ skills in environmental protection.

(e)  Either an Inter-class Green Campus Orienteering Competition or an Inter-class Searching for Environmental Facilities Competition is organized for Form 1 and/or Form 2 students every year. It is designed to help students learn more about where the environmental facilities are and how they are used in the school, with the ultimate goal of inspiring them to practise environmentally friendly behaviour.

(f)   'Bring your Own Reusable Bottles’ Day is organized for Forms 1-5 students at the beginning of each academic year. The aim is to encourage them to prepare reusable bottles for use throughout the whole year.

(g)  Two types of service-learning projects have been arranged for students. The first type, such as the beach cleanup and removal of weeds in preserving the wetlands, has enabled students to take action to improve the environment in the field sites. The second type, like Project "Community EXPLORE: From Science to Action" organized by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, is research-based and requires students to gather environmental information for different organizations.

3.  External environmental programmes

(a)  Regular environmental programmes

(i)            Since the year 2005-06, our school has taken part in the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador (SEPA) Scheme organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC), the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and the Education Bureau (EDB) Every year, most SEPAs receive formal basic environmental badge training in the form of seminars, STEM workshops and field trips offered by ECC. This can enhance their sense of mission and confidence in carrying out their duties during the implementation of environmental education activities. Some SEPAs with basic environmental badges receive Specific Environmental Badge training in the form of seminars, field trips and community services /activities under the annual theme.

(ii)           Since the year 2020-21, our SEPAs have joined the Green Prefect Programme organized by ECC, EPD and EDB. As green prefects, they have to monitor the green habits in different classes and suggest how to improve the environment.

(iii)          Since the year 2017-18, our school has participated in the ‘Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge’ which is now organized by the World Wildlife Fund. To encourage more students to engage in the programme actively, an Inter-class Wildlife Species Hunt Competition is organized for F.1-3 students every year. In the activity, students find and log the species in and around the school campus using the iNaturalist app to collect more data on Hong Kong’s urban biodiversity.

(b)  Cross-border educational tours

(i)     The junior form students and senior form students have joined the mainland exchange programmes organized by the Education Bureau. They have visited different places in the mainland, e.g. Zhaoqing and Zhangjiajie to understand the interrelationship between people and the environment and increase their sense of national identity.

(ii)    Since 2015, students have taken part in the Caretakers of the Environment International (CEI) Conference in which they are required to join seminars, workshops and visits, present their environmental research projects and participate in the cultural exchange activities with the participants from many other countries.
