Education for Sustainable Development Committee
The Environmental Education Committee which was established in the 2005-06 academic year was renamed as the Education for Sustainable Development Committee this year. The committee members work in conjunction with the entire school community as well as parents to complete our vision and mission.

This year, we have 32 student environmental protection ambassadors. A core group is set up to help our committee plan, organize and evaluate environmental activities, and give suggestions on the environmental policy. Under the Green Prefect Programme, two of them have been nominated as the Head Green Prefects, while 20 of them as the Green Prefects who are responsible for checking the environmental performance of F.1-5 classes.
The school is committed to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals through the conservation of natural resources, the improvement of environmental quality as well as environmental management. The implementation of this policy is the responsibility of each school member. To this end, the school shall:
1. inform our students, their parents and the school community of this policy and request joint efforts in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals;
2. address the sustainability-related issues, impact and management through the school curriculum;
3. promote the benefits of low-carbon living, conservation of nature and biodiversity, and minimization of pollution;
4. have green management practices and give priority to ensuring carbon reduction, waste avoidance and reduction, water conservation as well as the improvement of environmental quality;
5. keep the school campus green, clean and tidy; and
6. evaluate environmental performance to ensure continual improvement through inspections and audits.
Green management practice
The Committee makes an effort to initiate conservation practices and increase the awareness of conservation strategies among school members. An environmental monitor is elected in each class to ensure that the classroom environment is kept ‘green’.
1. Waste management in line with the principle of 3Rs
(a) The Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors (SEPAs) give presentations to all teachers and students on the benefits of recycling and the ways of implementing the Source Separation of Waste Scheme in school every year. The guidelines on waste management are also given.
(b) Recycling boxes for waste paper are available in all classrooms, staff rooms and the office. Students and staff members can dispose of the waste paper easily. The environmental monitors also check the classrooms regularly to ensure that students follow the guidelines on waste paper collection.
(c) Toner cartridges are collected for recycling under Ricoh’s Cartridge Recycling Program.
(d) Students are not allowed to print their source code in the computer rooms.
(e) Paper towels are not provided in students’ toilets.
(f) Solar-powered calculators and rechargeable batteries are used.
(g) Double-sided printing service is arranged for teachers.
(h) Use existing computers to receive fax.
(i) Electronic means are used for internal and external communication.
(j) Use student cards to borrow library books to minimise the materials used for making library cards.
(k) Refrigerators and microwave ovens are provided to encourage staff and students to bring homemade packed lunch.
(l) The rough paper is collected for reuse.
(m) Old envelopes, files, paper boxes and old posters are collected for reuse.
(n) Paper scraps are collected for reuse after board decoration.
(o) Old furniture was collected from other companies and reused in our school.
(p) Old textbooks are collected for reuse.
(q) Old desks are renewed for reuse.
2. Energy conservation
(a) The Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors give presentations to all school members on the benefits of energy conservation and the ways of participation in resolving the problem of climate change in school. The green tips for saving energy are also given.
(b) Signs are placed on switches reminding the school community to turn off lights and air conditioners when they leave rooms.
(c) Students are not allowed to switch on the heaters during the cold months.
(d) Most light sources are turned off after 4:00 p.m.
(e) Lighting in the car park is switched off from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m..
3. Indoor air quality
(a) Air outlets, ducts, filters and cooling coils within air-conditioning systems are cleaned regularly.
(b) Machines for fresh air are installed in the staff rooms.
(c) Photocopiers are installed in the properly ventilated area.
(d) Ventilation systems are installed in the laboratories.
(e) Anti-dust chalks are used in the classrooms.
Green Purchasing
All committees, teams, departments as well as the school office are encouraged to follow the guidelines on green procurement. Environmentally friendly products include:
(1) solar-powered calculators and rechargeable batteries
(2) organic fertilizers
(3) environmentally friendly Waterborne Enamel paint
(4) electrical appliances, e.g. refrigerators and air-conditioners with the ‘recognition type’ energy labels
(5) all-in-one multifunctional devices (for copying, printing and fax) with the ‘recognition type’ energy labels
